Winter Fuji

End of winter. Winter in Japan is the season of renewal and beauty where the clear blue sky meets snow.
The ‘Tsuru’ bird (crane), is considered the bird of happiness and a symbol of good luck and longevity because it is said to live 1,000 years. The ‘Chidori’ birds (plover) symbolise perseverance as they are known for having an ability to fly through strong winds and high waves during migration. Therefore, it is said that Chidori flying among the waves - symbol of worldly concerns - represents human ability to overcome challenges. The ‘Tsubaki’ (camellia), a flower that blooms in winter, carries a meaning of “love and fidelity.”... even love can bloom in these cold months.

Summer Fuji

Middle of summer at sunset. The deep, rich colors of sunsets on the Mount Fuji are a magical sight.
The ‘Asagao’ flower (morning glory) means “brief love” as it only blooms in the morning and cool time. ‘Tombo’ (dragonfly) are symbols of courage and strength while the ‘Chidori’ birds (plover) symbolise perseverance. While traditionally classed as a winter motif, a ‘Chidori’ pattern is commonly featured on summer items to evoke the coolness of winter as it is refreshing. During the ‘Natsu matsuri’ (summer festival) people gather and engage with their local community, watching ‘Hanabi’ (fireworks), eating ‘Kakigori’ (shaved ice) and ‘Suica’ (watermelon). There’s nothing like a refreshing watermelon to beat the heat of summer!
